Beginner Level Ceramics Lesson: "First Touch of Clay Love"


Purpose of the Course:

To teach the basic principles and techniques of this art to those who are new to ceramics, and to ensure that they have their first experiences with clay in an enjoyable and successful way.

At the end of the course, participants will have learned basic hand shaping techniques and will have the ability to create their own simple ceramic works.

Group Lesson - 750 TL (1 lesson fee)

  • A great opportunity for those who want to get acquainted with ceramics in a pleasant and comfortable environment.
  • The fee for one lesson is 750 TL per person, the total fee for two lessons is 1,500 TL.
  • Number of participants: 2-4 people.
  • Group lesson days: Monday & Tuesday & Thursday & Friday

Day group: 12:00-14:00
Evening group: 19:00-21:00

  • Course schedule:

1. In the first lesson you will shape your ceramic.
2. After approximately 1-1.5 weeks, you will come back to the workshop and glaze your product.

Course Content and Duration: (8 Weeks - 2 Hours per Week)

 

  • Week 1: Welcome to the World of Ceramics:

    • Definition and History of Ceramics: What ceramics are, how they have been used throughout history, and their place in different cultures.

    • Ceramic Materials: Different types of clay (from clay to porcelain), their properties and areas of use.

    • Tools and Equipment: Introduction to basic ceramic tools and equipment, how to use them and their maintenance.

    • Safety Precautions: Safety rules to be observed in the ceramics workshop.

  • Week 2: Getting to Know Mud and Preparation:

    • Mud Kneading Techniques: Methods of preparing the mud for use, removing air and making it homogeneous (ram head, spiral etc.).

    • Mud Tests: Methods of checking the consistency and suitability of mud.

    • Recycling: Methods of recovering unused sludge.

  • Week 3: Hand Shaping - Pinch Technique:

    • Pinch Technique: Shaping clay by squeezing it between the thumb and index finger.

    • Bowl Making: Making simple bowls using the pinch technique.

    • Surface Correction: Correcting and smoothing the surface of the tape.

  • Week 4: Hand Shaping - Coil Technique:

    • Roll Technique: Shaping the clay by rolling it into thin strips.

    • Vase Making: Making simple vases with the roll technique.

    • Joining: Joining and strengthening the rolls.

  • Week 5: Hand Shaping - Slab Technique:

    • Slab Technique: Shaping the clay by opening it into sheets.

    • Box Making: Making simple boxes with sheet technique.

    • Corner Joining: Joining and strengthening the panels from the corners.

  • Week 6: Surface Decoration:

    • Sgraffito Technique: Scraping patterns onto the surface of clay.

    • Stamping Technique: Applying pressure to the surface of the clay with different materials.

    • Painting Technique: Painting the surface of the clay with ceramic paints.

  • Week 7: Glazing Basics:

    • What is Glaze?: Definition, types and functions of glaze.

    • Glaze Application Techniques: Applying glazes with a brush, dipping and spraying methods.

    • Secret Security: Security measures to be taken into account when working with secrets.

  • Week 8: Completion of Works and Evaluation:

    • Cleaning of Artworks: Cleaning of dried artworks and making final touches.

    • Firing Process: Preparing the works for firing and explaining the firing process.

    • Course Evaluation: Overall evaluation of the course, feedback from participants, and suggestions for future projects.

Required Materials:

 

  • To be provided by the course (must be specified). Participants only need to bring their own apron.
